Transvaginal Ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound is a way to see inside your pelvis using a device called a transducer. The transducer is a thin, lighted tube that goes through your vagina and cervix to take pictures of your pelvic organs. These include your uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and cervix. A transvaginal ultrasound can help diagnose or monitor problems that affect your pelvic health, such as abnormal growths, infections, or pregnancy. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN ULTRASOUND AND A TRANSVAGINAL ULTRASOUND? : An ultrasound is a general term for a procedure that uses sound waves to create images of your body. A transvaginal ultrasound is a type of ultrasound that is done inside your vagina. This allows your provider to get a closer and clearer view of your pelvic organs than an abdominal ultrasound, which is done on your belly. However, an abdominal ultrasound may be preferred if a transvaginal ultrasound is not possible or safe. For example, if you are pregnant and the placenta is low in your uterus, a transvaginal ultrasound may increase the risk of bleeding.
